Six simple steps
- Keep the board open and easy to reach; communication should not depend on permission.
- Start with useful, motivating words such as water, food, toilet, help, stop, favourite places and activities.
- Model the board yourself: tap a photo while saying the word naturally.
- Ask one clear question or present two manageable choices.
- Wait quietly for a response. Some children need extra processing time.
- Respond to the message immediately when possible so the child learns that communication works.
